It’s been a while since we’ve updated the blog, but DBB has been staying busy and we’re back to let you know what’s been happening.

First up is Jo Lee’s victory in the finals of the Chicago Golden Gloves! Lee emerged the winner by decision in the April 7th finals, becoming champion in the 152 novice division. The fight, according to Lee, was his toughest match of the tournament, a “dog fight.” Lee “didn’t have a jab that night,” he confesses during training the following week, but his aggression and ability to set the tempo of the fight was enough to win out. “I worked him, I hustled him,” Lee says, “and I knew it was enough to take at least two rounds.” “I’m happy,” he says of his victory, “this is what I trained for.” He looks forward to his future fights, secure in the knowledge that “hard work and dedication wins.”

Luis Martinez also competed in the Golden Gloves Finals, and while he didn’t come away with the decision, his future challengers should pay attention: Martinez’s finals match was only the second amateur fight he’d ever been in. “He’s a good competitor,” says coach Justin Foster. “It was his second fight, and a good learning experience on what it takes to win.” Foster is proud of every DBB fighter who competed in the tournament. “All three guys were pretty well composed. To compete at that level, with that kind of crowd… They handled themselves under pressure pretty well.”

In other news, DBB held it’s first fundraiser pub crawl on May 27th, raising hundreds of dollars to support our work with the help of our friends and neighbors in downtown Waukegan. We spent a beautiful Saturday afternoon on Genesee Street, stopping at Green Town Tavern, 17 North, Tap Room, and Rosati’s, where we ate and drank for a good cause. We also handed out prizes donated from Jewel-Osco, Hansa Coffee Roasters, Wildberry, Marcus Cinema, and others. It was a great time with great people, and we hope to make it an annual event.

Finally, DBB has continued its mission to instill more than just athletic skill in its students. We believe that community service is as essential to overall health as nutrition and exercise, and we’ve put our beliefs into practice as volunteers at Waukegan’s harbor clean up and Cinco de Mayo festival. We love doing our part for the community, and we look forward to further opportunities to help our neighbors in this beautiful city.
